The Sad Story Of Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria's Highest Goalscorer

Rashidi Yekini was part of the Nigeria football squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. He was the highest goal scorer in the tournament and was also named the player of the tournament. Out of the total of 9 goals Nigeria scored in that tournament, Rashidi Yekini scored 5 of the goals. His ability to score goals, earned him the nickname "goals father".

He was also the first ever Nigerian to win the Africa Footballer of the year award, which he won in 1993. He played a total of 58 matches for Nigeria and scored 37 goals. He is Nigeria's highest goal scorer ever.


But it is unfortunate that despite these contributions to the football history of Nigeria, Rashidi Yekini received no good reward for that, even when he needed help most. It was reported that he died of depression.
