Leopold Stokowski launched his international career in the early 1950s and each year he visited various countries guest-conducting many of the world's greatest orchestras. His visits to London were always much anticipated and in 1963 he became the first great international conductor to appear at the London Proms. The BBC recorded many of his concerts, including his Proms programme in 1966 which included Ravel's 'Daphnis and Chloe' Suite No. 2.

Stokowski's 'live' concerts were always something of an event and in the final dance of the Ravel ballet, one gets the impression that the New Philharmonia players were sitting on the very edges of their seats! ... Here are the last few moments of the Suite to give an idea of what was a stunning performance. The whole work can be heard in a new 6CD BBC Legends Box which includes many great works, big and small, from Bach and Beethoven to Nielsen and Tippett. (Catalogue No. ICA Classics ICAB 5183).
