Have you ever looked down at your hands, feet or your face and suddenly noticed skin peeling? Have you wondered whether it's due to a deficiency, an allergic reaction or an infection? I'm sure we all have gone through this, and let's discuss today about what skin peeling is, its causes, and when we should take active treatment. So stratum corneum, or the superficial layer of your skin, is the one that generally sheds due to dryness. This layer is made up of dead skin cells, which are held together by fatty acids or lipids. They hold it together like bricks held by a motor. Now, when the skin barrier gets disrupted, is when you notice skin peeling. Why does it happen? It could be just simple causes like a weather change, dryness or winter, or extremely windy weather that can cause skin peeling. It could also be due to the products that you're using. If it's on the hands and feet, it could be the soap or the detergent you're using. On the face, it could be due to the skin care creams, like alcohol containing toners or alcohol containing wipes that we use. It could be due to your night routine, where you use a lot of exfoliants like retinols or alpha and beta hydroxy acids. It could also be physiological. Many times when the season changes from summer to monsoon, monsoon to winter, you could have the superficial layer of skin shedding and last but not least, it could be due to stress. When there is an increase in cortisol in the body, it causes dysregulation of the lipid barrier in the skin, causing skin peeling. It could be due to retinol or AHAs, but to a point. When you start your retinol treatment, you need to understand that retinoids improve the skin cell turnover. In So initial stages, you could have shedding or peeling of skin. It can also happen if retinoids are too high or sharp for your skin, and you need to then take it low and slow. And with chemical exfoliants containing AHAs and BHAs like your salicylic acid or your glycolic acid, remember these are nothing but chemical scrubs. They remove the skin layer from the surface of your skin. So if you overuse them, it strips off the natural oil, causing skin peeling. Yes, so certain deficiencies can cause skin peeling, but it generally happens all over the body. So generalised than in specific areas. Vitamin B3 or niacinamide, when it is less, it's called pellagra, and you start noticing dryness in skin peeling, especially in sun-exposed areas. When vitamin C is less, you notice that the wound doesn't heal well, and there is dryness and flaking there. When you have a deficiency of zinc or essential fatty acids, you start noticing skin peeling, more dandruff and dryness on the scalp because it keeps the barrier function normal in our skin. So in case you are starting on a new diet or you are eating poorly, skin peeling could be the first sign of the body's distress.
