Water being released to prevent Fontana Lake from flooding. Views from the top and bottom of the dam. Be patient...although tunnel 1 starts flowing first, it is rather unimpressive until after tunnel 2 gets up to speed.
Fontana Dam is the highest dam east of the Rocky Mountains at 480ft. When the flood gates are raised, spill water flows through two 34'-diameter tunnels that lead to the river below. The water is being released at over 100,000 gallons/second, traveling around 100mph at the bottom. The sprays are about 100ft tall.
