How do we respond to someone who is in distress and specifically asking for a mother? The PAC team delves in a bit deeper into this question as we’ve received comments from many people telling us that they are taking a big, positive first step and using reflection, “You’re looking for your mother?” The tricky part is, they aren’t sure how to move the conversation along after that step. We celebrate taking that first step, but now let’s take a deeper look into what the next step(s) can look like.

We have let them know they are being heard, but now let’s get curious. Are they wanting mom because they are scared, hungry, or something else? Moms have historically provided so much for us, so it is not uncommon for people to want their mothers if there is an unmet need, whether or not they are living with dementia. We want to avoid assuming we know what they want, so how can we find out? Watch as we explore this and offer up some things to try.
