Cherry Shrimp Stocking Tips: How To Start And Grow A Healthy Shrimp Colony In Your Aquarium!

Wondering how many cherry shrimp you should keep in your tank? In this video, I dive into how I approach cherry shrimp stocking in my own aquariums and share practical advice for shrimp keepers of all experience levels. Whether you're setting up your first shrimp tank or trying to grow a thriving colony, this guide is for you.

I’ve had a lot of questions recently about shrimp stocking levels—especially around how many cherry shrimp to keep per gallon or liter. While there are some general guidelines out there, the real answer depends on your tank setup, your goals, and how much effort you're putting into feeding and maintenance.

A popular recommendation, like the one in George Farmer’s book, suggests one shrimp per gallon for algae control. But if your goal is to breed or simply enjoy a colorful, active shrimp colony, you can go far beyond that—as long as you’re maintaining good water quality and supporting your shrimp with enough food and minerals. In my own experience, I’ve successfully kept colonies of 80–100 cherry shrimp in a 25-liter (6.6-gallon) shrimp tank without any problems. That’s around 15 shrimp per gallon, which may sound high—but it works when the tank is balanced.

Cherry shrimp stocking isn’t just about numbers, though. It’s about balance. I like to think of it as a triangle of three key elements: food, minerals, and stable water parameters. Get these right, and you can support a surprisingly dense shrimp population. Miss the mark on any one of them, and things can go downhill fast.

In this video, I also explain how I feed my shrimp tanks—ranging from target feeding with micro granules and algae wafers to minimal feeding that encourages natural foraging on algae and biofilm. Each approach has its pros and cons, depending on whether you're aiming for a low-maintenance display tank or a high-yield breeding colony.

For those new to shrimp keeping and wondering how many cherry shrimp to start with, I recommend beginning with around 10. This gives you a decent chance of getting both males and females, even if you're buying from a local fish store or ordering online where sexing isn’t guaranteed. I've personally started all of my colonies with batches of 10, and they've grown into hundreds—sometimes even thousands—over time.

Water hardness is another important factor in cherry shrimp stocking. If you’re in a soft water area like me, your shrimp may need mineral supplementation to molt properly. I use shrimp-specific mineral salts when necessary, but if your tap water already has a general hardness (gH) of 4 or higher, you may not need to add anything.

Filtration and stability go hand-in-hand with feeding. Shrimp have a low bioload, but when you’re feeding more heavily to support a dense colony, you need a mature, cycled tank with plenty of biological filtration. A well-established shrimp tank can easily handle an expanding population—just make sure you're keeping an eye on ammonia and nitrite levels.

Plants play a huge role in shrimp keeping success. They provide both natural filtration and extra grazing surfaces. Fast-growing stems like Hygrophila and floating plants like water lettuce are especially effective. Mosses are also great for providing cover and baby shrimp hideouts, even if they don't purify the water as quickly. In my experience, planted tanks not only help support larger colonies but also make your cherry shrimp colors pop, adding to the visual appeal of the tank.

To wrap it all up: cherry shrimp stocking is flexible, but it depends heavily on how you support the tank ecosystem. Start with a reasonable number of shrimp, give them a stable and well-maintained environment, and let the colony grow naturally. Whether your goal is to breed, enjoy their color, or keep algae in check, the key is to find the balance that works for your setup.
