Amines are characterized by their physical state, smell, boiling points, and solubility. Lower aliphatic amines are gases with a fishy odor, while higher ones are liquids or solids. Aromatic amines are typically colorless liquids that darken with air exposure. Boiling points are higher than comparable alkanes due to hydrogen bonding in primary and secondary amines, but lower than corresponding alcohols because the N-H bond is less polar than an O-H bond. Solubility in water is high for small amines but decreases as the hydrocarbon chain gets longer.
