Exploring California in our van, we’ve found many great overnight spots and campgrounds to stay at with kids. This week we wanted to share South Carlsbad State Beach and Campgrounds. It’s one of our favorites.

Just off Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, the 200 spot campground sits high up on a bluff above the three-mile-long State Beach. Whether in a tent or an RV, the campgrounds are set up well for everyone. Making it a highly desired beach campground with most spots getting booked 6months in advance.

We loved the campgrounds' easy access to the beach through a handful of well-spaced stairwells. The beach has plenty of soft sand and room to play at low tide.

After sundown, we enjoyed some downtime around the campfire before attempting to use the showers. Pro-tip the shower tokens you need for them can only be bought at the main office. So make sure to purchase tokens on the way in so you don’t have to walk back to the entrance like I did.

Thankfully the trip to get tokens allowed me to see the beach’s restaurant and store in action around dinner time. It was a vibrant area with families gathered around at tables and bonfires to enjoy the night. Also, a nice backup if you need extra food and drinks.

We all loved our time camping at South Carlsbad state beach but know camping is not for everyone. If you just want to bring the family out for the day, you can still access the beach through free parking day-use areas to the North and south of the Campgrounds along the 101.

We could have stayed much longer, but with other plans around Carlsbad, we ate breakfast and headed out. We’ll see you next week with more around our great state.
