Nothing strengthens and toughens the body quite like training in nature. Training outdoor in the woods or a field will teach your body to respond to dynamic and unpredictable demands in various different climates and conditions. Getting outside gives you access to sunlight, fresh-air, incredible vistas, and the chance to explore and navigate. These train you in ways that go far beyond a few linear movements in the gym.

Yet, many people believe the best way to build size and strength is by training in a comfortable gym. This lets you precisely control variables: gradually increasing resistance, changing angles, and generally tracking your goals.

But it’s also artificial and sterile. Very disconnected from the real ways we move our bodies.

No, you won’t be able to build as much strength in a controlled fashion if you’re constantly changing your movements - as being outdoors forces you to.

But at the same time, you’ll build a stronger grip, more robust movement patters, and tougher fascia and connective tissue. All things that allow you to

Running on trails might mean you can’t go as far or as fast as you do on a treadmill… but you’ll build FAR more strength, endurance, and stability in the ankles, hips, and core.

The list of benefits goes on. Once you realise that linear progress on a few lifts isn’t the only goal worth striving towards, you see the endless advantages of getting outside and seeing what you can find. Plus: it’s fun!

In this video, I demonstrate how you can practically achieve just that. I rocked up at a random spot in the woods and trained with whatever I could find. The result was an awesome workout and a fun adventure.
