Living in Dayton - Reno, Nevada

Dayton, Nevada, was initially known as Gold Cañon and was a resting area when snow made travel through the Sierra Nevada’s too grueling. The settlement took off in 1849 following Abner Blackburn’s discovery of gold, the first documented discovery in the state. The town had more than 200 miners working the canyon by 1851, making this the first non-native American settlement in Nevada. Today, homes make up a majority of Dayton, from large ranches to brand new custom homes like Santa Maria Ranch lining the Carson River.

Dayton is 45 minutes south of Reno and Sparks. Make the short drive west on Highway 50 and you’ll be in the Nevada State Capital, Carson City. There you can tour the Nevada State Museum and the State Capitol Building or enjoy a movie at the Galaxy Fandango 10 Theater. The Clear Creek Plaza is also convenient for residents of Dayton and includes a Walmart Supercenter, Trader Joe’s, Best Buy, Michaels, and a Costco Wholesale down the street.

While Carson City is convenient to Dayton’s residents, Dayton itself still has plenty to offer. A Smith’s shopping center sits on Lincoln Highway and Retail Road. It shares a center with Nevada Nugget, one of the only casinos available for entertainment in Dayton. Two miles away across the Carson River is the River Vista Commercial Center. 1st and 10 Bar and Grill is a well-liked restaurant located within the center. If you’re looking to work off that extra order of fries, head to River Vista Fitness. The club offers group classes, free weights, cardio equipment, personal training, tanning, and a kid’s club.

The Dayton Valley Golf Course is an 18-hole course north of the Dayton Airpark displaying beautiful views of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Arnold Palmer designed this course that is now the host of the longest standing PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in the U.S. Silver Oak Golf Course is only 20 minutes away, with its course winding through the high desert surrounding Carson City.

Lyon County School District serves Dayton beginning with Dayton Elementary School, educating pre-K through sixth grade. Nextdoor is Dayton Intermediate School, home of the Sun Devils which teaches seventh and eighth graders. On the opposite side of the intermediate school is Dayton High School, where the Dust Devils have excellent sports facilities. Dayton Valley Branch Library is across Old Dayton Valley Road from all three schools near the Dayton Senior Center.
