During the Second World War, there was a large amount of resistance against the Nazis and the German Army within Europe. As the German Army took large swathes of land across Europe, the different resistance groups emerged such as the Partisans and the Chetniks. Both of these were active in the Balkans and both wanted to expel the Germans out of Yugoslavia and other territories.

Stjepan Filipovic was a young man who joined the Partisans and he rose up to the position of being a commander within the resistance group. He fought against the Germans during World War 2, and also carried out acts of sabotage against them. He armed the Partisans with weapons, however was captured by a rival resistance group the Chetniks. The Chetniks did oppose the Germans however they often collaborated with them to, and they handed Filipovic over to the Germans. Filipovic was then interrogated but refused to give over any information about the Partisans, and he was sentenced to death.

One of the most defiant and profound pictures of the Second World War was emerged during Filipovic's execution, as he did not go down without a fight. Whilst on the gallows he defiantly stood with his arms aloft rousing the crowd and whipping them into a frenzy. His execution was one of the most defiant members of the conflict, and the image of before today is still incredibly famous.
