If you think your device may have a virus or some sort of malware, then I want to show you how to manually scan your smartphone or tablet.
This is going to work for the vast majority of the cases out there, and it's built right into the Google Play Store application.

So there's no need to download a 3rd-party anti-virus as they don't have the proper permissions to actually protect you in the first place.


Android Anti Virus Apps Don't Work
The way Android is setup, makes it so that Anti Virus software can't really investigate files and apps that are installed on your phone.
Android has an application sandboxing feature that prevents one app from accessing the data of another app.

So if you think Application A could be malware
And try to scan it with Application B, then the anti virus won't be able to check Application A that you're worried about.

This could be possible if the Anti Virus application was given root access
For example, I've read that Avast can load up a firewall feature if it has root access.
But I don't think they use that to dive deeper into all the apps that you have installed.

Because Android is setup in this way, those Anti Virus apps can't even scan the entire filesystem. . .let alone scan the details of your installed apps.

So if there's some malware that's been implanted into the Android filesystem, then an anti virus app isn't going to do much.
This becomes even more of a waste when you consider most of these options for Android do nothing more than actively scan to see which apps you have installed.

And then compare those package names to well known malware that's been detected within the community.
This means you end up losing out on both performance as well as battery life by installing these anti virus apps on Android

Especially when you consider that Google Play Protect already offers this scanning feature.
So you end up duplicating work that your phone is already setup to do.


How to Scan Android for Malware?
If you are really worried about your phone having some sort of malware installed, then I can show you a tool that is built into the Google Play Store that will manually scan the device.

Think of it as Microsoft Defender. . .but for your Android smartphone or tablet.
We can do this by first launching the Google Play Store application
Tapping on your Profile Image up here in the top right corner.
And then selecting the Play Protect feature from this menu here.

Here, you'll see the last time your device has been fully scanned.
With the option to actively scan all of the apps that are installed. . .or that are saved to the internal storage.
This will even check for suspicious behavior from your smartphone as well. . .so it's not just checking for known malware.

All we have to do is tap this Scan button here, and Google Play Protect will look for anything malicious on your device.
And it will have more permissions and greater access to your filesystem since it's a preinstalled app from your OEM. . .and not one that you or someone else has manually installed.

If you find that this service is not manually scanning your device. That may be due to the feature being disabled.
So tap the gear icon up here and make sure this top toggle is enabled.

I know some people turn this off because they don't want it scanning their phone. . .but other times it's been disabled by one of those nasty malware applications that we're trying to avoid.
