It is dedicated to Chamundeshwari, a fierce form of the Hindu goddess Shakti. The temple is considered to be one of the 18 Shakti Peethas, or sacred sites associated with the goddess Sati. The temple is built in Dravidian style and has a seven-tiered gopura or tower at the entrance. The main deity is a nine-foot-tall idol of Chamundeshwari, which is said to have been installed by the Hoysala king, Vishnuvardhana.
