A vasectomy is a simple surgery that works as a permanent birth control method for men who no longer want children.
The male reproductive system includes the testicles, two oval structures where the male reproductive cells, sperm, are produced.
Each testicle connects to the vas deferens, which are spaghetti-sized tubes that carry sperm to the urethra, a canal in the penis that carries urine and sperm.
During ejaculation each vas deferens propels sperm through the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland, these structures provide a nutritious fluid called "seminal fluid" that functions to transport sperm, and the combination of this fluid with sperm is called semen.
The semen travels through the urethra and is expelled from the penis and this action is called ejaculation. During sexual intercourse, semen passes into the female reproductive system where the sperm can fertilize an egg, so if you don't want to get a woman pregnant, a vasectomy is a great option, as this is a form of sterilization.
A vasectomy is a procedure in which the surgeon cuts and seals the tubes that carry sperm, so that the man's ejaculate no longer contains sperm, only seminal fluid.
To start the procedure, the patient will be given a local anesthetic by injection to numb the area, meaning he will be awake the entire time, but will feel no pain.
In a conventional vasectomy, a scalpel is used to make a small cut on the side of the scrotum, which is the bag of thin skin that contains the testicles.
The doctor will locate the vas deferens and lift it through the cut made, at this time, the patient may feel a slight pull.
The vas deferens will be cut and a small part will be removed, later the ends of the deferens cut vas will be tied, sealed or ligated with surgical clips and once this is done, the vas deferens will be placed back in the scrotum, the suture will be made and these same steps will be repeated on the other side. This procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
A Vasectomy can also be performed without a scalpel, instead a special ring clamp is used that will hold and expose the vas deferens, from this moment on, the procedure is the same as that of conventional vasectomy.
A Ring clamp vasectomy usually offers faster healing and fewer complications, but is just as effective as a scalpel vasectomy.
Immediately after the surgery is performed, the patient should rest in the doctor's office for a few minutes.
The incisions will heal within a few days, leaving little or no scar.
After the procedure, it is recommended to not participate in physical activity for a few days, to not bathe for 24 hours and to avoid lifting heavy objects. Moreover, the patient will be able to resume sexual activity after a week.
A vasectomy is a simple, highly effective and safe method to avoid pregnancy, however due to lack of information and myths about it, few men decide to perform it, because on many occasions they mistakenly think that it will affect pleasure, when in fact the pleasure will be the same, ejaculation will be normal and even the semen will look exactly the same, but it will no longer contain sperm, since these will disintegrate like any other cell and will be absorbed by the body.
