In this video, I explore the Nagaragawa Railway in Gifu Prefecture, a scenic local line that is currently facing a major turning point.
Known for its breathtaking views along the Nagara River, this 72.1 km (44.8 miles) line was originally part of a grand national project to cross the Japanese mountains. However, with declining passenger numbers and aging infrastructure, local authorities have begun official discussions about closing certain sections of the line within the next two years. I ride the "Slow and Clear Stream Train" to investigate the current state of the railway, from its beautiful National Tangible Cultural Properties and historic 1902 American-made turntable to the harsh reality of its multi-million dollar deficits.
Join me as I document the "Etsumi-South Line" before its potential disappearance and analyze the complex challenges of maintaining a rural railway in modern Japan.
