US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem during a trip to the region aimed to manage the fallout of Israel's strike on Qatar, a close US ally and primary mediator in Gaza ceasefire talks.

The pair emphasised the strength of the partnership between US and Israel, with Rubio restating US support for Israel's stated goals of eliminating Hamas and releasing the remaining captives from Gaza.

The visit comes as Israel's army prepares to invade Gaza City.
