How Hitboxes Work in Video Games

From Street Fighter to Demon's Souls you have probably heard or seen some impassioned game enthusiasts ranting about hitboxes but have you ever stopped to think about how they really work?

While conceptually hitboxes are pretty simple there are some factors when discussing collisions in games that get misconstrued all the time. Especially when it comes to understanding how damage works in a game.

Further complicating things, terms like hitbox and hurtbox are sometimes used interchangeably and are often even confused with bounding boxes which are generally for detecting physics, not damage.
