Mother Earth Films presents 'Sublime:There's No Place Like Home'

This motion poetry is a visual tribute to revere the legacy of carpenters and masons, to admire architectural precision of the houses of the land which speak Malayalam.

The year 2014, marked the beginning of my journey to experience the realm of traditional houses in my homeland, Kerala.
The year is also very dear to me due to the birth of my only girl child.

Human abodes of Kerala, primarily the design roots anchored in terracotta and timber truly fascinate me.
The ethereal charisma of such homes illustrates the craftsmanship of the traditional carpenter and mason.

On 14th June 2014, I photographed a traditional house located in Vadakara, Kozhikode during the monsoon season.
The moment gravitated me towards a purpose.
During this process, I met Rukmini Amma, Alex, Rashid, Leela, Aby, Jose and many more wonderful humans.
All of them were willing to understand my intention.

Few of them even offered me coffee or tea.
Ever since then, I had the liberty to revisit all of these houses.

Although the structural layout of some houses strike a similarity, the uniqueness of each house stands out through its distinctive characteristics.

Some are majestic, some are tiny.
Luminous facades highlight the brilliance of carpentry work.

The biodiversity of some houses is precious of a kind.
Wind has a special intimacy with some houses, tranquility is a rich asset of people who live here.

The journey affirms the superior skills of carpenters.
Carpenters who are not just remarkable graphic artists, but also exceptional master craftsmen.

To marvel at the traditional houses of Kerala is to experience the very nuance of design.
