USMC Air Assault On Island Airfield | III MEF Marines Hone Their Tactical Skills, Okinawa

U.S. Marine Corps Video News, February 23, 2021: U.S. Marines with Lima Company, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, currently attached to 3d Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) honing their tactical skills as they conduct an air assault exercise at Ie Shima island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.

Ie Shima Auxiliary Airfield is a training facility, managed by the United States Marine Corps and a former World War II airfield complex. Coral reefs fringe the entire island, which is oval in shape, about five miles long and two miles wide. After capture in April, 1945, an airfield was constructed (the retreating Japanese forces demolished the existing airfield and mined the center of the island). By June 14, three fighter groups and one night fighter squadron were operating from the airfield.
