Take a look at how many guides are openly advertising snakehead trips. Pretty much none. None that fish out of bass boats. The fishing for snakes has gotten pretty tough in the big canal systems. You could fish the C14 canal, the epicenter of snakehead fishing, and not catch a single one from the Sawgrass Expressway, all the way east to I95. Why is that? The simple fact is these fish are smart, and having been targeted and pressured heavily for the past 10 years, they know what's up. If we're being honest here, I don't think its because people are killing them off. That hype the media and big tv shows gave the snakes in the late 2000's and early 2010's has died off. There are still some dense people left who kill them and leave them on the bank to rot, but these fish are here to stay and not even 100 people destroying these fish every day would put a dent in the population. These fish are just plain smart. They will study you from a distance. Just watching. They can feel the water your boat is displacing and have connected it with our presence and intentions. I can't remember the last time I caught a snakehead that had hook marks in its mouth. Come to think of it, I might not have ever caught one that's previously been caught. I believe these fish can't be easily fooled twice. Accessing a place like this doesn't come easy. Canals that hold snakes that get little to no pressure that you can dump a boat in are very scarce. Some interesting things to think about, especially what the future holds for snakehead fishing in South Florida.
