In Regina, federal eyes turned westward as the newly appointed Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, made his first official stop in Saskatchewan.

With a fresh mandate under Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new government, Hodgson wasted no time getting into the thick of Prairie priorities — meeting face-to-face with Deputy Premier Jim Reiter to address a growing sense of economic urgency in the region.

At the heart of the conversation? A shared belief — echoed by both federal and provincial voices — that Canada must "retool" its economy in the face of global headwinds, from mounting trade tensions with the U.S. and China to shifting energy realities at home.

But Hodgson’s visit wasn’t limited to the Legislature. He also met with municipal leaders — including SUMA delegates and Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

We caught up with SUMA CEO Jean-Marc Nadeau shortly after that meeting to get his read on the minister’s tone, the substance of the conversation, and what municipalities are expecting as the Carney-era begins.
