Ryzen 5 1400 - Does the cheapest RYZEN 5 make sense?

Welcome folks!

First off, apologies for not uploading last week.. its been a hectic week at work and secondly apologies for recording with the cold... but with that out of the way, today we are going to be looking at the cheapest CPU currently available in the Ryzen 5 range. Im talking about the £165 R5 1400. If you have watched any of the other videos on this channel, you will know that I have been impressed by my Ryzen 7 setup but realistically, the mid to lower range is where most people buy or build PC’s and in order to make a dent in intels CPU dominance, the Ryzen 5 range is perhaps entering the the most important battleground.

The R5 range features both 4 and 6 core unlocked processors with either 8 or 12 threads respectively and when we take a look at the competition we can see just how these AMD chips stack up in comparison. Pricewise from the blue team we are looking at a locked core i5 7400 which has 4 cores, 4 threads and runs at 3.0Ghz with a max 4 core boost of 3.3Ghz or something along the lines of the unlocked core i3 7350K which has 2 cores and 4 threads and has very impressive headroom for overclocking… a spiritual successor to my old Pentium G3258 in most ways apart from price!

So on paper at least this chip has a lot to offer, the 1400 with its 8 available threads and 8Mb L3 Cache should make light work of any multitasking or mild productivity use but with the AM4 platform still in its infancy and it only being in the last few weeks that games have been getting ryzen specific updates, gaming performance was not quite where it could be at launch.

So lets see how this baby R5 1400 gets on in a few benchmarks and see how it compares to my own R7 1700.

Ill give you a hint, its impressive.. and I'm actually gutted I'm using this CPU for someone elses build! If you are not looking to buy a super high end GPU, the R5 1400 could be perfect for you!

The PC we are running the game on consists of the following:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1400
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME B350M-A
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengance DDR4
GPU: MSI GTX 970
