Huawei Releases HarmonyOS: A Next-Generation Operating System – An Interview on FM 98 Dosti Channel

On 28 November 2024, Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director of the Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future (PRCCSF), was invited as a guest on FM 98 Dosti Channel in Islamabad for a live interview on the program 'HUM QADAM.' During the discussion, Mr. Akram focused on the new operating system Harmony launched by famous Chinese Company. He highlighted how this next-generation operating system is emerging as a serious contender in the mobile market, especially in the face of ongoing American restrictions. Mr. Akram pointed out that Harmony OS, now integrated with the latest Huawei Mate 70 phone, signifies China’s continued dominance in the mobile industry, particularly as the country enhances its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. He emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence and IT as key drivers of the global economy, noting that Harmony OS could challenge the long-established ecosystems of iOS and Android.
During the discussion, Mr. Akram addressed the challenges posed by U.S. sanctions, which have been a recurring theme over the past two decades, especially during Trump's presidency. He explained that despite these sanctions, China has successfully expanded its research and development budget by about 8% annually, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and the establishment of a self-sufficient supply chain network. Furthermore, Mr. Akram discussed the economic dynamic between the U.S. and China, noting that despite heightened tensions and military posturing in regions like the South China Sea, trade between the two nations remains robust. This contradiction in U.S. policies underscores the complex interdependence that continues to shape global economic relations, while Huawei’s efforts in developing Harmony OS reflect China’s resilience and capacity for innovation even amidst adversity.
