At the beginning with a new child in your home, bedtime can be difficult for a variety of reasons. In today's video, I share a bedtime moment that you may experience with a new child in your home.

First and foremost, you are a stranger. Even if your home is welcoming and warm and you have a welcome basket and a stocked "yes" basket with food, you are still a complete stranger. It is a normal reaction for a child to not want to sleep alone in their bed or in their room. Going slow, at their pace, offering choices and accommodations will help ease this transition.

Even so, I still tend to loop in the case manager if there are intense emotional responses during certain situations. A child sleeping on the couch could be problematic for some case managers, so I like to be transparent as to what's happening in my home (there can be a lot of rules about sleeping arrangements). Additionally, some behaviors can be signs of abuse. By reporting observations, I can sometimes gather additional information that may be helpful as I support the child. If we don't ask, then we may never be informed.
