“You can’t block without gloves!” DEBUNKED. The nuances of bare knuckle defense

My recent video “Martial Arts Blocks are not Blocking: The Karate Kid lied to you” was a round about way of teaching basic stand up striking defensive techniques for boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, sanda, MMA, and other combat sports.

   • Martial arts “blocks” aren’t blocking...  

But since my training partner and I were wearing boxing gloves, we received dozens of comments te repeating a commonly believed myth about blocking punches:

“That wouldn’t work without gloves!”

This is one of the most commonly believed martial arts myths that holds otherwise potentially skilled fighters back. If you don’t know how to block without gloves, you will never understand how to block with gloves on.

False. No. 100% wrong. If you are trying to use the padding on a pair of boxing gloves to stop the conclusive force of a 900 pound punch, you will get hurt... badly. In this video, I will teach you how to fight with your skeleton- using correct body mechanics to minimize damage from strikes with or without gloves.

Why were boxing gloves invented in the first place? Simple: to allow fighters to punch harder and more recklessly with less risk of breaking their hands on the hard bones of the head, elbows, and forearms- some of the most powerful defensive tools of a boxer. That being said, the unprotected palm of the hand is the primarily tool for parrying punches, which works identically with or without boxing gloves.

These are the same techniques I use with any style of gloves boxing or MMA or for bare knuckle fighting. They are simple, easy to learn, high percentage techniques that have stood the test of time.
