George Miller, the director of "Mad Max: Fury Road," reflects on the discord between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron during the making of the 2015 blockbuster.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Miller discussed his new film "Furiosa," which serves as a prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Theron's character. At 79, Miller acknowledged the divergent approaches of Hardy, 46, and Theron, 48, on set, attributing their behavior to differences in character portrayal.

"As an optimist, I interpreted their actions as reflecting the dynamic of their characters, where they needed to learn to collaborate for mutual survival," he explained. "While there's no justification for it, there's a tendency in this industry to excuse disruptions by citing exceptional performances."

Reports have circulated regarding tension between Theron and Hardy during the filming of "Fury Road," with Theron herself mentioning in a 2022 book about the production that she sought mediation due to conflicts with Hardy.

Nearly a decade later, Miller described Theron and Hardy as "two very distinct performers."

"Tom has a complex nature coupled with brilliance, and despite whatever issues he had at the time, he required coaxing out of his trailer," Miller noted. "On the other hand, Charlize exhibited remarkable discipline, owing to her background in dance, which translated into the precision of her performance. She was always the first on set."

Ahead of filming with Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in "Furiosa," Miller emphasized the importance of addressing potential stresses with the actors.

"Ensuring safety, both physical and psychological, is paramount—especially as fatigue sets in during production. It's a far cry from the 'wild old days'," he stated in an interview with The Independent.

"Furiosa" delves into a 15-year journey preceding Theron's role in "Fury Road." Miller disclosed that he initially conceived both "Furiosa" and "Fury Road" concurrently but opted to prioritize the latter. He revealed to Empire in March that even Theron expressed interest in "Furiosa" before the production of "Fury Road."

"It was then that I recognized the potent narrative within this story," Miller reflected on the prequel.
