New York City - InfraRED Black and White - Shot on RED Weapon Dragon 6K

One of the lesser known features of the RED camera system is their interchangeable Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) system, something that's fixed on most cameras. It's a filter between the lens and the sensor. I decided to take advantage of this and purchased the Full Spectrum Infrared OLPF from Kippertie, and challenged myself to shoot exclusively with it on a trip to New York City in October 2017. I shot with and without an additional R72 Infrared filter on the front of the lens (cuts out the visible light spectrum) to get a mix of infrared-only shots (look more alien with white trees and black skies) and full spectrum shots (which look closer to normal).

The interesting thing about cutting out visible light in Times Square is it made all of the screens appear black/off. No digital effects were applied aside from color grading.

By default infrared filming is in color, but it's a weird mix of pink colors and I decided to keep it all in black and white.

This was shot all handheld with a RED Weapon MG in 6K 2:1 (Dragon Sensor) at 85 frames per second. I used a Sigma 24-35mm lens and a Global Dynamic United 40mm lens.

Filmed across Manhattan in the Upper East Side, Central Park, Times Square, and along the East River.
