Welcome to Kanchipuram Temple Vlog!!
In this video, I will be sharing my experience of visiting two significant Perumal temples located in Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu.
The first temple we visited is Sri Varadharaja Perumal Kovil, located in the Chinna Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. This temple is a significant Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Built during the reign of the Chola dynasty in the 11th century, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams, one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples mentioned in early Tamil literature. The temple covers an area of 9.5-hectare (23.5-acre). The temple complex is known for its impressive architecture, featuring intricately carved pillars, large gopurams (gateway towers), and a vast courtyard. One of the most famous architectural pieces in the temple is the huge stone chain sculpted in a single stone.
Another significant features of the temple are beautifully carved lizards and gilded with gold, over the sanctum. The presiding deity is a 3.0 metres (10 ft) tall idol made of granite in standing posture, while Thayar is a 1.2 metres (4 ft) image in sitting posture. Apart from the main stone idol, the temple has the wooden image of Varadharajaswamy made of Atthi or the fig tree and preserved under water in a secret chamber. It is brought out for worship once every 40 years. The festivities last 48 days after which it is immersed in the water and stored for the next 40 years.
The second temple we visited was the Sri Pandava Dutha Perumal Temple. This temple is located Periya Kanchipuram, a locality in central Kanchipuram, a South Indiann town in the state of Tamil Nadu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped as Pandava Thootar Perumal (Krishna) and his consort Lakshmi (Rukmini.) The central shrine of the temple has a large image of the presiding deity Pandava Tutar, which has a height of 25 ft (7.6 m). The temple has a four-tiered rajagopuram and a single precinct enclosed in the walls. The temple is considered one of three oldest Vishnu temples in Kanchipuram; The other two are Ulagalantha Perumal Temple and Yathothkari Perumal Temple. The temple is originally believed to be built during the period of Pallavas. The major festival of the temple is Krishna Janmasthami, celebrated during the Tamil month of Avani (August–September). The other major festival of the temple celebrated during Bharani of Karthikai (November–December) in honour of Arulala Peruman Emperumanar.
