History :

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a warrior king whose valour and chivalry enriched the history of the Maratha kingdom and established him as one of the region's best kings. Shivaji was coronated on June 6, 1674, and began his reign over the Maratha Empire, which included some of the most major battles. This day is also known as Rajyabhishek Sohala or Shivrajyabhishek Sohala. In the Hindu calendar, it was held on the 13th day (trayodashi) of the first fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha in the year 1596.

The coronation ceremony of Shivaji Maharaj, which was conducted by Gaga Bhatta of Varanasi, a master of the four Vedas, the six philosophies, and all the Hindu scriptures, was a spectacular occasion, with more than 5,0000 people in attendance.

Significance :

To hold the coronation ceremony for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the rulers had to take permission from the Mughal emperors. However, Shivaji Maharaj, who fought against the Mughal empire, went ahead with the ceremony without taking any permission. Shivaji Maharaj went on a procession around his empire after the magnificent coronation event and was accompanied by his entire military, ministers, and generals in this grand gesture. His royal banners were carried aloft on two elephants ahead of the parade.

The coronation is significant in Maratha history since it signified the start of Hindavi Swarajya in India. On this day, Shivaji was awarded the titles of 'Shakakarta,' which means 'beginning of an age', and 'Chhatrapati' (paramount sovereign). During his coronation, he was also given the title of Haindava Dharmoddharak (protector of the Hindu faith).

Every year on June 6, Maharashtra and Shivaji's followers celebrate this day with much delight and passion.

Various programmes are held at the Raigad fort in Maharashtra as part of the Shivaji Coronation celebrations.
