In this edition of Tarikh, Mubarak talks about Sam Manekshaw, also known as Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, was a highly respected Indian military general who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He played a key role in India's victory against Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak war and was widely regarded as one of India's greatest military heroes.


Manekshaw was born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, Punjab, India, and joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1932. He served in World War II and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in the Burma Campaign. In 1947, he joined the Indian Army and played a crucial role in integrating the princely states of Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, and Junagadh into India.


Manekshaw was known for his strong leadership skills, strategic thinking, and decisive actions. He was highly respected by his colleagues and subordinates alike and was known for his quick wit and sense of humour. He retired from the Indian Army in 1973 and passed away on June 27, 2008, at the age of 94.
