During the 2002 qualification session of the Reno air races, Bill 'Tiger' Destefani had a major backfire in Race 7 Strega just as he crossed the home pylon at a speed of 486.79 mph which blew the induction trunk and lower cowling off the airframe. He made a perfect dead-stick landing and the team was able to borrow the missing/broken pieces from the Miss America team so they could compete in the races later in the week.
