Sermon Title: Out of Jesse's Root: Adam
Sermon Text: 1 Cor. 15:42-48
Rev. Nathan Kilbourne
We conclude our three-part series on Jesus' genealogy this Sunday having looked at three individuals named in the genealogies in Luke and Matthew. We hope you've had time to explore other names listed in those genealogies. You've likely discovered surprising stories, risque stories, as well as beautiful stories. We might not expect some of these stories to be part of God's great movement toward us in Jesus Christ. Yet, God uses all kinds of stories for God's redeeming work - stories of brokenness, stories of doubt, stories of terrible decisions and more. Yet, God works through all of them to bring to us the gift of salvation and newness of life in Jesus Christ.
You've also likely noticed there are discrepancies in the genealogies. These shouldn't alarm us but cause us to ask the question "Why?" What are these discrepancies signaling to us about Jesus? For instance, Matthew includes women and outsiders as a way of signaling Jesus' ministry beyond Israel. Luke begins his genealogy with Abraham seating the story of Jesus within God's promises to Abraham and Israel to say Jesus' ministry is an extension of God's original promise or, better yet, a fulfillment of it.
Continuing along these lines, Matthew doesn't begin Jesus' genealogy with Abraham, but rather begins with Adam. Why is this the case? What is Matthew wanting us to see about Jesus? To find out, join us this Sunday as we wrap up "Out of Jesse's root!
