Minari: The American Dream | Video Essay

A video essay that examines the film Minari (2020) as an all-encompassing vision of the American Dream as told through the eyes of a single Korean-American immigrant family.

The Yi family struggles through extreme hardships, facing endless problems and stressors from seemingly all sides. In this video essay, I take a look at why this is exemplar of the American dream we so often hear about in the history books and family trees.

So join me on this journey to see one portrayal of this never-ending pursuit through my thoughts.

At the time of creating this video, there is a lot of controversy over this film being considered a "foreign language film" by the Golden Globes, and thus not in consideration for the category of "Best Drama". All I would like to say is that as we advance and evolve sociologically, there will be problems and inequalities that come to light as time goes on. Progress and recognition are paramount factors in our ability to advance together as a society. With that being said, I am grateful and pleased to be able to engage and interact with more forms of representation for Asians and Asian-Americans in popular media. Minari as a film - as a piece of art - is an exemplary feat of progress for this movement and I applaud it and any others who step up to the plate. So thank you to everyone involved in the creation of this wonderful film.
