Genital surgery is happening on minors. And it’s a serious problem we must end. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers circumcision a choice for parents to make, taking away the autonomy and ignoring the fact that babies cannot consent to this unnecessary surgery, even though they agree that the data is not substantial enough to recommend routine neonatal circumcision. Most do this to their child out of fear of the potentially higher risk of UTIs and STDs. Even though, these risks are not only very rare, but avoidable with safe sex practices and simple personal hygiene.

There are of course other potential risks I didn’t have time to mention, but they’re rare and can be treated by a circumcision later in life. Studies show that only 1 to 3% of penis owners develop phimosis. Meanwhile, 5 to 9% of humans develop appendicitis. But we're not out here recommending appendectomies to every baby.

All this being said, Trans kids exist and they deserve developmentally appropriate expressions of affirming care as outlined by WPATH’s standards for care. Watch my other videos for more.
