Dive into the Abyss: Meet the Stygomedusa Gigantea, the Ghostly Goliath of the Deep!

Join us as we explore the mysterious world of the Stygomedusa gigantea, one of the largest invertebrate predators haunting the ocean's depths. Known as the giant guardian of the underworld, this elusive jellyfish has intrigued scientists since its first collection over a century ago.

Despite sightings of just over a hundred individuals, this enigmatic creature has been spotted in all ocean basins except the Arctic. Most notably, researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute confirmed a unique symbiotic relationship between the jellyfish and a small fish in 2003, after capturing rare footage in the Gulf of California.

Unlike typical jellyfish, the Stygomedusa lacks tentacles. Instead, it uses its four massive oral arms to ensnare prey. Its bell can span over one meter, with arms reaching an astonishing ten meters in length. To avoid predators, its eerie red color provides perfect camouflage in the deep, dark waters.

In 27 years of ROV surveys, MBARI researchers have encountered this rare specter only seven times, from Juan de Fuca to the Gulf of California. Our most recent sighting was in Monterey Canyon in 2013, but we're always on the lookout for another chance to witness this deep-sea marvel.
