War of Words: How AI is missing the point on the power of language

AI large language models like Chat GPT have already changed the game on the use of words. But can a machine ever truly excuse, justify, blame, praise, rationalise or theorise in a way that could mimic or even challenge human capacity?

Covering such topics as how nursing students talk about their career choices and decisions about reporting poor care, through to interactions in medical consultations and police-suspect interviews, and on to examining the nature of the words used in professional reports on equality, diversity, and inclusion issues, this wide-ranging lecture will shed new light on how we communicate and interact.

Putting forward the view that generative artificial intelligence systems fail to use language in a socially productive sense, Jim will argue that there will always be a place for human analysis of our words and the effect they have on society.
