When we are talking about the future in investing it’s always helpful to look at the past. History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes. Let’s take a look at history to determine the likelihood of the market taking another double dip. The markets in Canada and the US bottomed in September 2022 rallying into December although we’re still down about 9% in both rolling 12. Is it possible we are headed for a double dip? If so, here’s what you can do to protect your assets.

Sure, it is possible that the market will do a double dip. I know that’s not exactly what you wanted to hear, but thinking ahead ensures you will be ready to take appropriate action. Looking at a basic chart of the S&P 500 we see a minor double dip during the market bottom of late 2002 to early 2003. In 2008, we had a bounce on the way to the bottom which is entirely normal and expected. Then, another bounce on the way down in 2020. Which brings us to where we are today. The last 9 months started out steep and landed with a bleh.

So, are we due for a double dip? I don’t believe so based on information available today. That is not a prediction, and I could be wrong. Here’s the thing about predictions. They’re garbage. Why? Because when you have a large number of inputs, seemingly small inputs can result in large and unpredictable results. This is Chaos theory and the Butterfly Effect.

Focusing on whether we’ll have a double dip is not helpful, it won’t change the future and it will likely just result in causing you stress. Instead, focus on what you can control which dictates your reaction in the event it comes true. Right now, that’s a focus on: 1) quality (for small cap, you want to hit that up early in the recovery if at all), and 2) diversification with an overweight to sectors with amazing opportunity.
