STORYLINE:
Young people from all over the world have converged on Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Pope's arrival on Monday to celebrate the Catholic church's youth festival.
Mammoth crowds are expected at a papal Mass on Rio's Copacabana beach and other ceremonies during Pope Francis' seven days in Brazil, the world's most populous Roman Catholic nation.
The Pontiff arrived in Rio de Janeiro late afternoon on Monday.
During his stay, the 76-year-old Argentine-born pontiff will meet with legions of young Catholics converging for the church's World Youth Day in Rio, a seaside city better known for hedonistic excess.
Only hours before the Pope's arrival, Catholics from around the globe sang and waved flags along the streets of downtown Rio where the pontiff will parade in an open Popemobile.
"We are already feeling the spirit of the World Youth Day very strongly in the people - they look at you differently when you have the pilgrim kit," said Roberto Pinho from Brazil.
Facundo Tolala said he hitchhiked from his native Argentina.
"I travelled 18 days exclusively to see him, not for the beaches or for the place, I came for Francis and for the faith in the church," said Tolala.
More than one (m) million people are expected to pack the white sands of Copacabana for the Mass celebrated by Francis.
