Satyendra Bhavsar, from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, describes the progress made by Toronto & Region Remedial Action Plan (RAP) partners to ensure that resident fish are safe to eat.

In 1987, Canada and the U.S. recognized 43 Areas of Concern (AOCs) around the Great Lakes, where local environmental degradation was causing harm. Toronto and Region is one of these Areas of Concern.

A local Remedial Action Plan team has been tracking environmental conditions to ensure the waters surrounding Canada’s largest urban center are drinkable, fishable, and swimmable. The progress made is remarkable.

This is a testament to the commitment of all the partners to secure a healthy Toronto Harbour.

With the population growing rapidly in Canada’s largest urban area, continued efforts to restore, improve, and monitor the health of the Toronto waterfront must remain a priority.
