This is an edited version of the film, cut down to just under 30 minutes. It includes just the musical segments through to the scenes of the music conservatory in Shanghai. This is an excellent film to showcase various aspects of music, arts, and culture of China to young children as well as the talents of world famous violinist, Isaac Stern.
In 1979, as China reopened its doors to the west, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. While in China, Stern performed concerts and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This classic documentary records this extraordinary cultural exchange. Stern and David Golub, the pianist who accompanied him, narrate part of the film, while Tan Shuzhen, a deputy director of the Chinese Conservatory of Music, provides a different and complementary perspective on Chinese culture. Developing the hearts and souls to musical involvement and passion, Isaac Stern meets and plays violin with musicians and gives performances as he tours China. He finds great technical ability, but a lack of understanding. He teaches that there is more to music than just playing the notes, but rather making the notes and lines say something, that words cannot express. As they say in the film, to know the taste of a pear, you must eat it, you cannot study it. So it is with music, you must play it, experience it, feel it. You cannot just study it, but you must be involved intimately.
