Описание к видео CIS Seminar "Reframing Natural User Interfaces as a Social Concern"

The University of Melbourne 8 April 2014 CIS Seminar by Professor Kenton O'Hara (Microsoft Research lab, Cambridge UK)

ABSTRACT
After many decades of research, the ability to interact with technology through gestures, voice, sensed body movements and brain activity is becoming an everyday reality. These technologies form part of a broader suite of innovations that have come to be characterised as Natural User Interfaces (NUIs). The typical motivation behind these interaction modalities is to offer more intuitive forms of interaction with technology that draw on our everyday capabilities we use to interact with people and things in the real world. Rather than adapt their action or communications to the peculiarities and limitations of technology NUIs are intended to allow people to act and communicate in ways they are naturally predisposed to. Such motivations around NUI frame the concerns of Human-Computer Interaction simply as a question of ease of use -- a tractable problem to be solved given sufficient engineering investment -- but one that closes down particular opportunities that be enabled by natural interaction. In this talk Prof. Kenton offers an alternative perspective that reframes the narrative around NUI as an embodied and social concern -- a perspective we have come to call Social NUI. In this perspective, our concerns are not with the interface itself, but with how the opportunities for action enabled by the technology are given shape and meaning in socially organised practice by the particular communities using them. He discusses this perspective by exploring various NUI technologies in a diverse set of social contexts. These will include touchless gestures in a surgical context, brain-computer interaction in social gaming and NUI interactions in the context of shared mealtimes.
