I'll be showing you how to present like Steve Hardison on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Visit https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/ to attend one of my FREE LIVE online trainings.
1. Who you’re being MATTERS MORE than what you’re doing. (0:56)
When I first heard Steve mention these words, I wasn’t entirely sure what he meant, but after spending some time reflecting on this, I finally understood it. Our energy, our presence, our love and the way we treat others matters so much more than any accolade in the world. We need to make a conscious decision about who we want to be FIRST before doing anything. Many of us, in life, choose to follow other people’s games; we get married, we go to school, we get a great education, but many of us don’t reflect enough about what our legacy is and what we actually want to show up in the world.
This applies so much to public speaking, because many people including me, by the way, just send you a bunch of techniques and tricks that you need to master, but the truth is, if you truly want to become a world class speaker one day, there’s no trick, no secret formula that will take you there. It’s about your presence, the way you show up for others and how much you actually care. Always ask yourself. Who am I BEING in this moment? Am I judging the other people I’m speaking to or am I celebrating them? Am I being negative about how others react to my ideas or am I open to learning their perspectives? Reflect on these points so you can become not just an incredible speaker, but more importantly, an incredible human being as well.
2. Openly communicate who you are to the world & the right people will gravitate towards you. (2:41)
Steve, let’s just say, is not your regular kind of guy. He paints his fingernails with black and a white exclamation mark, he expresses his love to every human being he meets, has a swing in his house, was probably one of the few people in the world to say NO to being on Oprah and dances like a maniac which I truly enjoy since I do the same. His uniqueness was also reflected in the way that he shared ideas in that room when he spoke to us. It was the type of speech you don’t forget; where he’s dancing like crazy, running up and down the stage, telling us to really pay attention to every word he’s saying. Unique type of guy; means a unique type of experience.
The way this applies to public speaking and communication for all of us, is NOT being afraid to break some rules about how to present. Sure, you should definitely take inspiration from others, but don’t let that shadow who YOU are. If you’re an introvert, you don’t have to be loud all the time, you can still be an exceptional speaker without it. But, more importantly, don’t be shy to take the risk. Whether it’s dancing in front of your audiences, eating a sandwich in front of them or running around the place, don’t be shy to step more into who are so you can become the world class speaker that you’re truly meant to be.
3. Get your audience to pay attention as if their life depended on it, because it does. (4:45)
There’s a great speech available on YouTube that I’ll link in the description from Hardison, called TBOLITNFL, which stands for the best offensive lineman in the NFL. It’s one of his rare public appearances that was recorded, so definitely take a look. In that speech, he begins by asking questions like “Is your mind in the room right now?” “Are you really listening to what I’m saying?” and that caught my eye, so I kept watching and then he said.
How attentively would you listen if you were in a plane and it was crashing? How much effort would you put into listening to the flight attendees? Apply that level of listening to this conversation. It blew me away. Steve was able to draw in his audience from the moment he started sharing insights, and it’s a great reminder for us all that our stories, our messages should matter SO MUCH that we encourage our audiences to do the same, that we encourage them to really pay attention because what we’ll say might change their life, so tell, how attentively are you listening to this video? Think about it.
