ReligionMakers: Strength In Faith celebrates Reverend Canon Nan Arrington Peete, retired episcopal priest in the Diocese of Washington and the first ordained woman to address the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury. Rev. Peete speaks about her career and Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray, the first black woman to be ordained as an Episcopal priest.

Prior to becoming priest in the Diocese of Washington, Rev. Peete served as the Canon for Ministry in the Diocese of Southern Ohio from 1999 to 2003 and before that, she served on the staff at Trinity Church Wall Street as the associate for Pastoral and Outreach ministries. Earlier, from 1989 to 1994, Rev. Peete served in the Diocese of Atlanta as Canon to the Ordinary. In 1988, Peete was invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury to address the Lambeth Conference, which meets every ten years and consists of Bishops representing Dioceses around the world. Her speech advocating for the ordination of women was well received and resulted in an international policy change allowing for the ordination of many women priests and subsequently as Bishops of the Episcopal Church. In 1985 she became rector of All Saints Church in Indianapolis and prior, she served as the curate at St. Mark’s Church in California after her ordination in 1984.
