Correct fabric tension is the key to beautiful and neat embroidery. Follow this step-by-step guide to prepare your hoop like a pro.

1. Preparing the Hoop

To prevent the fabric from slipping between the hoop rings, you’ll need cotton tape.

Here’s what to do:
• Take the inner (bottom) ring of the embroidery hoop.
• Wrap cotton tape around the entire ring with overlapping turns — layer each wrap slightly over the previous one.
• Continue wrapping until the whole ring is covered.
• Cut off the excess tape.
• Fold the end of the tape and secure it with a whip stitch (you can also glue it if stitching isn’t an option).

✅ Why do this?
The cotton tape adds grip between the fabric and the hoop, preventing slipping during embroidery.


2. Placing and Stretching the Fabric

Now that your hoop is prepared, it’s time to stretch the fabric.

Steps:
1. Lay your fabric over the inner hoop. Make sure your design (if any) is positioned correctly.
2. Gently place the outer (top) ring on top of the fabric.
3. Press down evenly so the rings fit together and the fabric is held between them.
4. Tug the fabric gently from all sides:
• Work around the circle — pull from the top, then bottom, then sides.
• Your goal is to achieve even tension, without wrinkles or distortion of the weave or pattern.


3. Securing the Fabric

Once your fabric is evenly stretched:
• Tighten the screw on the outer ring to lock the tension.
• For a stronger hold, use a screwdriver if your hoop’s screw allows.

Gently tap the surface of the fabric with your fingers — it should sound like a drum.
This means the fabric is tight and secure, ready for embroidery.

• Use high-quality fabric without too much stretch or distortion.
• If the fabric loosens over time, you can re-tighten it slightly without removing it from the hoop.
• Don’t over-tighten the screw — it can damage the hoop over time.
