Four girls killed.

1965 — The murder of Viola Liuzzo.
After the Selma-to-Montgomery march—after “Bloody Sunday” at the Edmund Pettus Bridge—Liuzzo, a Detroit mother who came south to help, was driving volunteers home.

A carload of Klansmen spotted her.
Gary Thomas Rowe was in that car.

A high-speed chase.
Gunfire.
Liuzzo was shot in the head.
Her car crashed into a ditch.

Rowe admitted he was there.
Again, the asset was protected.

He testified against the others in exchange for immunity.
The government placed him in Witness Protection: a new name, a new life, a stipend.

A man present at some of the most notorious racial murders of the century didn’t go to prison.
He went into retirement.
