Gwak Yeo, a scholar-official who eventually chose a life of seclusion, wrote this poem upon the King's command. It captures a serene moment where the King’s majestic procession meets the humble, carefree life of a village elder, symbolizing a truly peaceful and prosperous era.

🌿 Background & Context: The King and the Commoner

In 1056, King Munjong ordered the construction of Jangwon Pavilion. While the King was visiting, Gwak Yeo looked out from a high tower and saw an old man riding an ox, returning home through the rain. The King was so moved by this peaceful scene that he asked Gwak Yeo to write a poem about it. This is an "Eung-je" (응제) poem—one written by royal command.

🏛 The Wisdom of Contemplation

"Gwak Yeo’s poem explores the themes of contemplation and solace within nature by vividly depicting the serene life of an elderly farmer.

While attending an official royal procession, the poet observes an old farmer who 'rides his ox as he pleases with a look of perfect peace, passing along the ridge half-soaked by the lingering drizzle'. This image captures the tranquility of a simple life lived in harmony with the laws of nature—a sharp contrast to the complex power dynamics of the palace. The farmer’s presence serves as a symbolic reminder of the true value of peace and happiness, standing in opposition to the wealth and glory pursued by kings and officials.

The poet continues by noting, 'Now I know there is a house near the water's edge,' recognizing with a positive heart that the farmer is heading toward a sanctuary free from worldly agony.

In the final line—'Following him, the setting sun flows along the stream'—the poet portrays even the sun (the great order of nature) as becoming one with the flow of the farmer’s humble life. This illustrates a state of existence where one has abandoned worldly desires to become completely integrated with nature.

By simply contemplating this scene, the poet finds great spiritual solace from the distractions of the secular world. Ultimately, the poem demonstrates that a self-sufficient life in nature symbolizes ultimate peace, and the act of observing such a life is, in itself, a profound source of mental comfort."
