From 1995 and until 2004 Russian military officer Sergei Skripal was operating as a recruited agent of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), better known as MI6, while working as a covert officer in Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU).

According to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), until his arrest in 2004, he had provided the UK with the identities of 300 Russian spies and other military intelligence secrets.

He was arrested in December 2004 while returning from London to Moscow and was later charged with 13 years in prison for treason and espionage.

In 2010 he was exchanged in the spy swap of Russia and the US, when FBI completed the Operation GHOST STORIES which uncovered and arrested 10 covert Russian spies.

Since 2010, Sergei Skripal has been living in the United Kingdom.
