I purchased this Kimber used and took it out to the range to test it out that day. I was distraught when I fired low end .45 ACP rounds through it and got some failure to feed errors, jams, and stovepiping. I went back to the store where I purchased the firearm to see if the weapon had performed like that when they test fired it. The salesmen told me that it was most likely either my Kimber was finicky on ammo and I needed to use more expensive rounds or that the magazine it came with was worn and not pushing the rounds hard enough into the chamber. So, I purchased a Kim Pro Tac-Mag and several boxes of top shelf rounds and headed back to the range.
I noticed some improvement in the performance with fewer FTF errors and less stovepiping, but I was still having problems. So, I went home and did some of my own research. I discovered that these issues are at least somewhat common with my model Kimber, and other Kimbers with a 4" barrel and that to correct that, I could replace the recoil spring. When I looked through the owner's manual, I found instructions to replace the recoil spring after every 800 rounds. Considering that I purchased the weapon used, the likelihood that I needed to replace the recoil spring was high.
At first, I struggled for about twenty to thirty minutes trying to figure out how I was supposed to remove the recoil spring from this particular 1911 because the setup was different from the other 1911 I've handled. The frustration I felt at that was worse because I know if I could have seen a video or watched someone remove the spring from this model, it would have taken me half the time, if not less, to learn it myself. But, I eventually got the spring out and replaced the new one. The difference in the tension on the slide is incredible. I can't wait to take it out to the range to see how it performs.
