As you leave the north side of the city via the US 31 freeway, you'll likely start near I-465 in the Carmel or Meridian Hills area. This initial stretch is smooth, fast, and highly developed, surrounded by corporate headquarters, upscale neighborhoods, medical facilities, and shopping centers.

North of I-465, US 31 transitions into a limited-access highway, providing a straight shot north with no stoplights for over 90 miles, thanks to recent multi-billion-dollar upgrades by the Indiana Department of Transportation. These improvements make it one of the fastest and most efficient ways to travel across the state without needing to hop on the interstate.

As you accelerate out of Indy’s northern suburbs, the scenery begins to change. Corporate campuses give way to fields, and soon, the high-rises shrink behind you.
Carmel to Kokomo: Suburban to Industrial

Within minutes, you’ll pass through Westfield, one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Indiana. Known for Grand Park Sports Complex, this area has become a magnet for youth sports and suburban expansion.

Continuing north, US 31 bypasses Noblesville and Cicero, skirting farmland, subdivisions, and the occasional church steeple rising in the distance. The road remains wide and fluid, built for both commuters and long-distance travelers.

Next comes Kokomo, an industrial city with a long-standing automotive history. Known for its deep ties to the Chrysler and Delco plants, Kokomo has redefined itself in recent years with downtown revitalization, a walkable historic district, and a growing tech presence. The highway bypasses the city, but travelers can easily exit to explore local diners, museums, or the charming Highland Park, home to the famous “Giant Sycamore Stump.”
Kokomo to Peru to Rochester: A Journey Through Rural Indiana

After Kokomo, the traffic lightens, and the land opens up. Rolling cornfields and stretches of flat farmland dominate the landscape. This part of the drive is marked by silos, tractors, grain elevators, and the rhythm of rural Indiana life.

Beyond Rochester, US 31 continues its straight, efficient path northward into Marshall County and the city of Plymouth. This small city offers convenient services for road trippers—gas stations, fast food, and hotels—as well as a historic downtown and several annual festivals.

As you approach Plymouth, the drive remains comfortable and wide open. You may notice more frequent wind turbines dotting the landscape—signs of Indiana’s growing investment in renewable energy. Roadside stands selling fresh corn, tomatoes, and homemade pies often appear in warmer months, adding flavor and charm to the trip.
Approaching South Bend: A City in Transition

The final stretch of the journey brings you into St. Joseph County, home of South Bend, the fourth-largest city in Indiana. The outskirts are a mix of suburban neighborhoods and industrial zones, but soon, the skyline of Notre Dame Stadium, the Golden Dome, and the outline of downtown South Bend come into view.

As you near the city, US 31 becomes St. Joseph Valley Parkway, seamlessly connecting to US 20 and I-80/I-90 (Indiana Toll Road) for drivers heading east or west. From here, it's easy to access central South Bend, the University of Notre Dame, Memorial Hospital, or downtown entertainment districts.

South Bend has undergone a significant revitalization in recent years, blending its rich manufacturing heritage with technology startups, education, and the arts. It's a fitting end to a drive that begins in one great Indiana city and ends in another—both deeply rooted in tradition but looking toward the future.
