Abraham Frazier’s first language as a child was Choctaw and his parents spoke very little English. He remembers growing up that there were many people who spoke Choctaw, and said many elders still speak the language today.

Abraham is a community Choctaw language teacher. In his classes, he teaches in phases, which include the Choctaw alphabet, vocabulary and grammar. He said, “It is very important that the native language is taught in such a way that they can keep it and retain it.” He hopes all students will use the language they learn, share it with others and try to keep it going.

He said we must continue using the Choctaw language and do what we can to preserve it. He emphasized that it is important for us to carry on the words that our ancestors left for us. “We all need to get together and keep this language alive and keep it going.”
